General FAQs:

I noticed a price increase.

Unfortunately, we have had to increase our prices to include a small gratuity. We still welcome and encourage additional tips for our wonderful staff, but this is not required nor expected.

Can I bring my child/friend/spouse to wait in the waiting area while I receive my treatment?

We love our families too! However, at Healing Mountain Spa, we pride ourselves on having a relaxing and calming environment. Your treatment is a perfect reason to take time for just yourself. Therefore, we kindly request that all friends, family members (not receiving a companion service) and/or children remain home for the duration of your appointment.

When should I arrive for my appointment?

Please plan on arriving 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment. This gives you time to complete the necessary intake forms and discuss your upcoming session with your therapist. In addition, this ensures that your treatment starts on time.

Should I shower before a treatment?
It’s best that you feel comfortable going into your first treatment and if showering induces a sense of well-being for you, by all means shower. Cleanliness is appreciated by therapists.

What do I wear for a treatment?
The type of treatment that you will experience will dictate attire. If you are unsure what to wear, please ask us! Remember that all therapists are trained in special draping techniques to ensure that the only exposed part of the body is the area being worked on at the time.

What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?
Your comfort level is important because it helps to ensure maximum benefit from the treatment. Like any other service that you pay for, it is your prerogative to simply say “I am not comfortable and do not want this treatment to continue.”

What happens at the end of the treatment?
The therapist will signal the end of the treatment by telling you it’s over and she will depart the room so that you redress. Any special considerations will be discussed with you at this time IE: stay out of the sun, limit strenuous activity, etc.

How much do I tip?
Like other personal services, customary tips range from 15-20%. For exceptional service, you can certainly tip more!

What should I expect during my visit?
The therapist will begin by discussing your service with you and asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, depending upon the service and if there are any conditions needing to be addressed.

It is important to list all health concerns and medications on your intake form so the therapist can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies so the therapist is aware if she needs to use a different oil or lotion during the session.

Massage FAQs:

Do I have to be completely undressed for my massage?
You should undress to the level you are comfortable with. For a full body massage, most get completely undressed. However, if you will be more comfortable during the session leaving your underwear on, that is fine. The therapist will work around the clothes you left on as best as they can. If removing all your clothes makes you too nervous and unable to relax, then you are not getting the optimal benefit from the session. Your massage therapist will step out of the room to give you privacy to undress and get comfortable on the table.

What do I do during a massage treatment?
Make yourself comfortable. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, she/he will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable.

Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s up to you. It is your treatment, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

Can I talk during my session?
Sure, if you’d like to talk go right ahead. The important thing to remember is that this treatment is all about you relaxing and enjoying the experience. Feel free to relax, let your mind float free and enter a state of bliss.

In many instances, people may feel more relaxed starting off talking, and as the session progresses, enter quiet states of relaxation.

Most importantly, there are times when you need to speak up. If the therapist is doing anything to make you uncomfortable, you should let her know immediately. Also, let her know if you get too warm or too cold, if the room is too bright, or if the pressure needs to be changed (lighter or deeper). If something is not working for you, speak up! It’s OK!

How often should I get a massage?
It varies from person to person. If you are just looking for some occasional relaxation, then a session every 3-6 weeks may be fine for you. However, if you are looking to address a specific condition, then it is recommended to go more frequently at first and then slowly taper down to a maintenance schedule. Sometimes more frequent 60-minute sessions can be effective until your goals are met and a maintenance schedule is in place.

Frequency of sessions should be discussed with your massage therapist after your treatment when she has a better hands-on understanding of your particular muscular issues.

When should I not get a massage?
There are a few conditions which would prevent you from enjoying massage. You should not book a massage if you have a fever, cold/flu, or contagious skin infection. That’s it.

There are many other conditions in which your therapist may need to adapt his/her techniques (i.e., arthritis or osteoporosis) or avoid an area completely (i.e., cuts or burns). With some conditions, it is a good idea to get approval from your physician before you receive massage (cancer, certain heart conditions, pregnancy). This does not mean you cannot get a massage. But it’s always better to be cautious.

How will I feel after my massage treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience a significant decrease or freedom from long-term aches and pains. Many feel a little slowed down for a short period and then notice an increase of energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity which can last for days.

If you received a deep massage, you may be slightly sore the next day – much like a good workout at the gym. Sometimes a hot shower or a soak in the tub can ease this soreness.

After your session, you should increase your water intake. Just a glass or two more than normal is usually fine. This helps keep your body’s tissues hydrated and healthy.

Facial FAQs:

How many times should a facial treatment be done?

It is recommended that those who adopt a facial regimen get a suitable facial once a month for optimum results and a glowing complexion. The frequency is normally higher for beginners. Newbies can get at least two to four facials a week at first, then every ten to fifteen days as prescribed. A lot depends on the client’s age, skin type, sun exposure, and overall skin health.

Do Facials Unclog Pores?

Facials are the most effective therapies for deep skin cleansing. However, depending upon your selected facial, it may or may not include extractions.

When Do Results Start Showing?

Almost immediately. When your facial is done, you will find smaller, almost invisible pores, an even smoother and more radiant skin tone, and supple, hydrated, younger-looking skin.

Will a facial cause me to have pimples or acne?

This one is true! Facials have the benefit of energizing tired skin into performing its functions. The massage and cleaning technique in a facial will cause your skin to target and heal certain areas if a congested pore needs to be purged.

A light breakout is possible if you haven’t had treatment before or haven’t had one in a long time. An allergic reaction to our skincare products, which may appear as a breakout, does not occur in your facial. A rash will occur when you try a new product and a strong ingredient in it does not agree with your skin. Our therapists are well trained to recognize possible causes in your skin that could lead to either of these forms of breakouts, and we only use reputable products. Facials are intended to benefit the skin rather than damage it.

Does a facial hurt?

Depends. Some facials are painful, but they don’t have to be. You’re either someone who enjoys being pampered and letting everything feed you well, or you want us to “get in there” and clean out your pores. You tell your specialist what you want and plan, and they will tailor your care to meet your requirements. Even if it differs from one visit to the next!

Are there different facials for different skin types?

Yes there are. You will fill out paperwork before performing any facial and this questionnaire will tell the esthetician about your current drugs, skincare products, recent facial procedures (e.g. injections, peels, laser) and your main skin concern. The esthetician will discuss the details you have.

Before beginning the facial, the esthetician will conduct a skin exam to assess your skin type. Following the determination of your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive, mature, or dehydrated), the products used in your facial would be suitable for your skin type.
